THE JAPANESEGOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR

 

"THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF TRANSIT SHELTER FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING VICTIMS IN

SHAN "

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$ 96,500for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Transit Shelterfor Human Trafficking Victims in ShanState”.

Mr. Mitsuji Suzuka, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Tun Min Zaw, District Administrative Officerof Muse District Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force, signed the grant contract of this project on 8 January 2010.

South East Asia is identified as a sub-region with the highest prevalence of human trafficking. Myanmar Government has been taking vigorous efforts to combat human trafficking in collaboration with UN agencies, local NGOs and International NGOs. Since Muse District Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Forceurgently needs a temporary care center in Muse for returned victims from China, the Government of Japan will fund through its GGA Programme the construction of a transit shelter equipped with furniture, water and sanitation facilities.

This assistance is expected to benefit victims in human trafficking, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
