THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR

 

"THE PROJECT FOR TRANSPORTATION OF FIVE FIRE ENGINES RESCUE TRACK AND ABULANCE FOR

CYCLONE NARGIS AFFECTED AREA IN AYEYARWADDY DIVISION "

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) scheme, handed over Five Fire Engines, One Rescue Truck and One Ambulance to the Ayeyarwaddy Division Fire Brigade as a humanitarian assistance to Cyclone Nargis affected area.

At the handing over ceremony held at the Fire Services Department of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement on 25 January 2010, His Excellency Mr. Yasuaki Nogawa, Ambassador of Japan to the Union of Myanmar, on behalf of the Government of Japan, handed over the above-mentioned vehicles to His Excellency Maj. Gen. Maung Maung Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement of the Union of Myanmar.

Out of 68 serviceable Fire Engines the Ayeyarwaddy Division Fire Brigade had before Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in 2008, 20 Fire Engines was lost in the Cyclone.Therefore, in order to enhance the fire fighting services in the Ayeyarwaddy Division, the Government of Japan decided to make this contribution through its GGA Programme.

This assistance is expected to benefit the people living in the Ayeyarwaddy Division and will help to save the lives of the people in case of disasters in future.
