THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR

 

"THE PROJECT FOR STRENGTHENING OF NATIONAL HEALTH LABORATORY (LOWER MYANMAR) IN

YANGON DIVISION "

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$ 96,060for a humanitarian program entitled “The Project for Strengthening of National Health Laboratory (Lower Myanmar) for Pandemic New Influenza in Yangon Division”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. U Ne Win, Director of National Health Laboratory (Lower Myanmar), signed the grant contract of this project on 24 February 2010.

National Health Laboratory (Lower Myanmar) situated in Yangon city was established in 1963 and is responsible for investigation and diagnosis of influenza.Since first case of influenza A (H1NI) was found in Myanmar in the spring of 2009, the laboratory has investigated specimen and taken preventive measures to control the spread. However, its facility is not enough to test specimens from all over Myanmar. In recognition of the importance of the laboratory, the Government of Japan decided to fund equipment for influenza diagnosis, such as four thermal cyclers, Gel Imaging System,Digital Camera & LCD Display with Microscope, four High Speed Refrigerated Centrifuges, four Electrophoresis Systems and so on.

This assistance is expected to benefit people of Myanmar by promoting their health, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
