February 24, 2010

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend assistance of US$90,385for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Installation of Electric Power in Kwin Ya Shay Village, Bago Division”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister/Counselor, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Than Win, Chairman of Kwin Ya Shay Village Development Committee, signed the grant contract on 24th February2010.

Kwin Ya Shay Village is situated on north-east of Yangon and the total population is 1,746. Most of the villagers earn their living from agriculture or related small-scale industries. The villagers currently have to relay on candles and battery lights for their activities after dark as there is no electricity in the village. Students have to study lessons only with the light of candles and oil lamps and poisonous animals often bite people in darkness. In order to improve the electricity supply in Kwin Ya Shay village, the Government of Japan decided to fund electricity installation including a 50KVA Rice Husk Generator and Electricity Distribution as well as construction of one Rice Husk Store.

It is expected that this assistance will improve the villager’s daily life and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
