The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, granted US$ 87,159 for “The Project for Improving Study and Living Environment of Mary Chapman School for the Deaf in Yangon Division” on September 12, 2008. An all-weather gymnasium and a repaired pump house funded bythe Embassy of Japan, were handed over by Mr. Kiyotomi Tada, Second Secretaryof Japanese Embassy to the authorities concerned on June 30, 2010.
The Mary Chapman School for the Deaf was established in 1920 by Ms. Mary Chapman, a British lady who had earnest concerns and affections for the deaf children in Myanmar. The school has offered basic education and vocational training, and the students have been able to be reintegrated into society. The school had minimal facilities and no gymnasium that enabled to enhance the students’ physical and mental health. Therefore the school was badly in need of an indoor gymnasium.
In order to help providing a better learning and living environment for the deaf children, an all-weather gymnasium and a repaired pump house were funded by the Embassy of Japan in Yangon under the Grassroots Grant Assistance Programme.
It is expected that this assistance will promoting healthy environment for the deaf children and benefit the disabledinMyanmar, thereby further strengthening existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
