Japanese Assistance to Victims of Cyclone in the Western Part of the Union of Myanmar

1.On November 16 (Tuesday), the Government of Japan decided to provide an emergency assistance amounting to US$ 500,000 through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to the Union of Myanmar, which has sustained serious damages from Cyclone “Giri” in its western region.

 

2.From October 22 (Friday) to October 23 (Saturday), RakhineState in the western part of Myanmar was struck by a severe storm, which affected approximately 260,000 people including 45 deaths or missing according to reports as of November 10.

At present, the surrounding areas are facing a serious situation where many houses and agricultural land have been destroyed.

 

 

3. The Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view, considering the friendly relationship between Japan and Myanmar.
