The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend an assistance of US$ 105,380 for a humanitarian program entitled “The Project for Scaling-up the Production of Anti-venom in Yangon Region for Anti-venom Laboratory”.
Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and Dr. Daw Khin May Oo, Director of Anti-venom Laboratory, signed the grant contract of this project on 10 December 2010.
The Anti-venom Laboratorywas established under the Department of Medical Research in 2006 in order to study and produce snake anti-venom. Snake-bite is an epidemic in Myanmar where the annual average of poisonous bite is approximately 8,000. Although the laboratory has succeeded to develop anti-venom from chicken eggs instead of horse which can carry clinical side effects, the laboratory is not capable of producing enough anti-venom from chicken eggs due to a shortage of facilities. In order to meet the requirements of the increasing demand of snake anti-venom, the Government of Japan is funding through its GGA Programme the provision of laboratory equipment.
This assistance is expected to benefit the people in Myanmar by facilitating easy access to free snake anti-venom, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar. |
