December 21, 2010

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA) Scheme, decided to extend an assistance of seven vehicles for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Strengthening of the Yangon Region Fire Brigade”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Thin Htay Shwe, Region Chief of Yangon Region Fire Brigade, signed the grant contract on 20 December 2010.

Yangon Region is densely populated and built up with residential houses and commercial buildings. In case of fire, it turns into a major disaster. After the number of incidents that conventional water fire engines have not dealt with successfully, the Yangon Region Fire Brigade requested the Embassy of Japan to provide modern fire engines, such as foam tender which carries large amount of chemical foam to tackle a blaze. In response to the request of the Yangon Region Fire Brigade, the Government of Japan has decided to fund the program to provide seven fire engines including two foam tenders for Yangon Region.

This assistance is expected to benefit the people in the region by enhancing protection and rescue activities against disasters, thereby further strengthening existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
