JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

MAW YWA THIT MONASTIC PRIMARY SCHOOL IN MARUK - U TOWNSHIP, RAKHINE STATE

February 11, 2011

The Government of Japan, under its Grassroots Grant Assistance (GGA)Scheme, decided to extend an assistance of US$ 79,404 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled ” The Project for Construction of Maw Ywa Thit Monastic Primary School in Mrauk - U Township, Rakhine State”.

Mr. Kazuyuki Takeuchi, Minister / Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Japan in the Union of Myanmar, and U Tin Aung, Chairperson of Maw Ywa Thit Monastic Primary School Building Construction Committee, signed the grant contract on 11 February 2011.

Maw Ywa Thit Monastic Primary School began in 2002. The monastic school had provided formal education to the students in the area. The number of students has increased, making its educational facilities insufficient. Nowadays, students are forced to take classes in limited available spaces using the monastery building. Although the villagers have made strenuous efforts to improve its educational facilities, they are still confronted with financial difficulties.

In such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a school building, toilets, and school furniture for Maw Ywa Monastic Primary School through its GGA Programme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students at the above school with better learning conditions, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
