JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR THE PROJECT FOR

CONSTRUCTION OF MAYYU WUNTHA MONASTIC PRIMARY SCHOOL IN SHWE PYI THAR TOWNSHIP, YANGON REGION

22 February, 2012

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme, has decided to extend an assistance of US$99,605 for a humanitarian program entitled “The Project for Construction of Mayyu Wuntha Monastic Primary School in Yangon Region”. H.E. Mr. Takashi Saito, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and U Thein Win, Chairman of Mayyu Wuntha Monastic Primary School Management Committee, signed the grant contract of this project on 22 February 2012.

Mayyu Wuntha Monastic Primary School was opened with 25 students in 1993, with the aim of teaching poor children. When the number of students increased to 200 in 2009 and there was a shortage of classrooms, a new temporary school building was constructed. However since the school building is now dilapidated, the students are faced with difficulties to learn their lessons. Although the abbot of the monastery and members of the school management committee made strenuous efforts to construct a new school building, they were faced with financial difficulties.

In such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a school building, toilets and school furniture, for Mayyu Wuntha Monastic Primary School through its (GGP/GGA) scheme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students with better learning conditions, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
