The Government of Japan , under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme , decided to extend an assistance of US$ 81,520 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled ” The Project for Construction of Pakokku Monastic Middle School in Tanintharyi Region ”.

Mr. Ichiro Maruyama , Minister- C ounsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission of The Embassy of Japan in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar , and U Kyaw Soe , Chairman of Pakokku Monastic Middle School Building Construction Committee , signed the grant contract on 29 February 2012 .

Pakokku Monastic Middle School was established in 1968. It was opened for orphan and poor children in order for them to basic education and religious training to be well-mannered. This monastic school received the poor children from 5 ward in suburb of Dawei and the most vulnerable orphan and poor children who live in Thai-Myanmar border 100 miles away from Dawei. In 2008, the regional commander and private donors constructed a new school building. Right now, the new building and monastic building are used in teaching for students. There are 102 boarder students in which 63 of those students are female students who have no separate apartment and live in whatever situations. In the matter of fact, the abbot and school committee made their best efforts to construct a female apartment and new school building. However, they were faced with financial difficulties to build up an apartment and new school building while being expensed of living and education fees for over 100 boarder students.

Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a school building, toilets, and school furniture for Pakokku Monastic Middle School through its GGP/GGA Programme. It is expected that this assistance w ill provide the students with better learning conditions, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
