THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR “THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF MEDICAL STORAGES FOR ANTI-INFECTIOUS DISEASE CONTROL MEDICINE IN SHAN STATE AND MAGWE REGION”

6 March, 2012

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme , has decided to extend an assistance of US$94,693 for a humanitarian program entitled “ The Project for construction of medical storages for anti-infectious disease control medicine in Shan State and Magwe Region ”.

H.E. Mr. Takashi Saito, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar , and Dr. Win Maung, Director of the Department of Health, Ministry of Health, signed the grant contract of this project on 6 March 2012.

The Department of Health (DOH) is one of the 7 departments under the Ministry of Health and it is the implementing agency of all health activities in Myanmar. The drug and diagnostic test kits for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria are to be kept in the State/ Regional Health Department storages, however, the recent condition of these storages are not sufficient to keep heat-sensitive drug and kits. Moreover there is not enough space given that the amount of the drugs and test kits will increase in double due to the Global Fund support to Myanmar. In order to improve the capacity and quality of the storages, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGP (GGA) Programme for the construction of storage in Taunggyi, Lashio and Magwe respectively.

This assistance is expected to benefit the Myanmar people by promoting their health, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
