JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR

THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF TILAWKARAMA MONASTIC PRIMARY SCHOOL IN MAGWAY REGION

15 March, 2012

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme, has decided to extend an assistance of US$ 76,900 for a humanitarian program entitled “ The Project for Construction of Tilawkarama Monastic Primary School in Magway Region”.

H.E. Mr. Takashi Saito, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the U nion of Myanmar, and U Aung Ko, Chairman of Tilawkarama Monastic Primary School Construction Community, signed the grant contract of this project on 9 March 2012.

Tilawkarama Monastic Primary School opened in 2002 for orphans and poor children who were in need of education but could not afford to do so due to the increase in the number of students. As the number of students increases annually, preparations have been made to construct school buildings. The students were faced with difficulties since the school buildings were close each other and desks and benches were insufficient. Tilawkarama Monastic Primary School has not only provided education to children but also provided health care by opening a clinic. The abbot of Tilawkarama Monastery and members of the Board of Trustees strove to ensure sufficient classrooms for increasing students and construct a new school building. However, as the Board of Trustees was making endeavours to cope with educational expenses for more than one thousand students, it was faced with financial difficulties to construct a new school building.

The two-storey reinforced concrete school building, which comprises of 4 classrooms, toilets, school furniture and walk way, was funded under the GGP/GGA scheme to enable the monastic school to provide a better learning environment. This assistance will benefit students in their pursuit of formal studies, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
