PRESS RELEASE

SIGNING OF EXCHANGE OF NOTES FOR THE JAPAN’S “NON-PROJECT GRANT AID” ASSISTANCE

21 March, 2012

On 21 March 2012 (Wed), H.E. Mr. Takashi Saito, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and H.E. U Tin Naing Thein, Union Minister for National Planning and Economic Development of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, exchanged Notes in Nay Pyi Taw for a Non-Project Grant Aid covering an amount of 1.6 billion Japanese Yen.

Due to the flood disasters that hit Myanmar after July 2011, paddy fields were severely damaged, houses were destroyed and swept away, and bridges and roads were affected in areas such as Magway Region, Kayin State and Bago Region. In response, the Government of Japan provided emergency relief goods (water purifiers, generators, etc.) equivalent to about 10 million Japanese Yen in total to the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in October 2011. However, further international assistance is needed for the recovery and reconstruction of disaster- affected areas.

Although a speedy recovery and reconstruction from the damages, and disaster prevention measures are currently one of the pressing issues in Myanmar, the lack of construction and other equipment has hindered the progress of such measures. This Grant Aid will provide funds for the purchase of such necessary equipment, and contribute to the speedy recovery and reconstruction, as well as future disaster prevention measures in Myanmar.
