PRESS RELEASE

THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRASSROOTS GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR

“THE PROJECT FOR UPGRADING OF THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER FOR WOMEN IN YANGON REGION”

22 March, 2012

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme , has decided to extend an assistance of US$40,048 for a humanitarian program entitled “ The Project for Upgrading of the Vocational Training Center for Women in Yangon Region.”

H.E. Mr. Takashi Saito, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar , and Daw Mar Mar Myint, Principal of the Vocational Training Center for Women in Yangon Region, signed the grant contract of this project on 22 March 2012.

The Vocational Training Center for Women was established in Bahan Township in 1953 to protect victims of human trafficking and street children, and help them go back to their family. Currently there are about 120 women , for whom the Center provides vocational training such as sewing and embroidery to promote their healthy growth and rehabilitation into society . There has been an urgent need to construct a tall, strong fence around the Center, because the existing fence is not sufficient to ensure the privacy and security of women. Also providing sewing machines was desirable to help women to acquire skills to become more independent.

In order to upgrade the Vocational Training Center for Women, the Government of Japan will provide funding through its GGP (GGA) scheme for the construction of fence and providing sewing machines. This assistance is expected to benefit the people of Myanmar and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
