The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP/GGA) Scheme , has decided to extend an assistance of US$ 87,150 for a humanitarian program entitled “ The Project for Construction of Shwe Min Wun Monastic Primary School in Yangon Region”.
H.E. Mr. Takashi SAITO, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the U nion of Myanmar, and U Myint Aye, Chairman of Shwe Min Wun Monastic Post Primary School Management Commitee , signed the grant contract of this project on 19 March 2012.
With a view to res olv e the dificult of affending schools by children of ethnic minorities from less developed border areas, the abbot and members of the Board of Trustees started, in 2002, to used the nunnery inside the compound of Shwe Min Wun Monastic Priyatti Monastery as a school to teach children. The government re c ognized the school as m onastic e ducation s chool in 2006. Children of poor families in the neighbouring wards who were similarly faced with difficulties for schooling also attended. Since Cyclone Nargis destroyed the school buildings in 2008, students had to temporarily learn their lessons at buildings where people practise meditation in the compound of Shwe Min Wun Pariyatti Monastery. At present, the number of students increased to 418 and 14 teachers were teaching lessons.
The two-storey reinforced concrete school building, which comprises of 6 classrooms and school furniture was funded under the GGP/GGA scheme to enable the monastic school to provide a better learning environment. This assistance will benefit students in their pursuit of formal studies, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
