SIGNING OF EXCHANGE OF NOTES FOR THE PROJECT OF “ FOOD AID FOR POVERTY AREAS INCLUDING ETHNIC MINORITIES IN MYANMAR ” THROUGH WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME (WFP) MYANMAR

  1. On 18 April, 2012 (Wed), Mr. Masaharu Kohno, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Italy and Ms. Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) signed and exchanged Notes for the Project of “Food Aid for Poverty Areas including Ethnic Minorities” with an amount of eight hundred and fourteen million Japanese Yen (¥ 814,000,000) in Rome, Italy.
  2. Due to the floods that hit Myanmar in July 2011, extensive damages were caused in Magway Region and neighboring areas, which are important agricultural region in the Central Myanmar. In response, the Government of Japan decided to provide food aid to the flood-affected areas including ethnic minorities where the people were faced with shortage of food.
  3. This project will provide 12,160 tons of the emergency food aid worth for approximately 345,000 people living in the disaster-affected areas including ethnic minorities and those who are facing malnutrition from the natural disaster, conflicts and poverty. Practically, this project will provide Food for Work to the local residents who engage in construction and repair of roads, bridges and irrigation canals.
  4. In addition, this project will facilitate maintenance and reconstruction of infrastructures, contribute to the community development in rural areas of Myanmar and also assist post-disaster recovery and poverty alleviation.
