The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has decided to extend an assistance of US$91,996 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Kangyi Village Primary School in Mahlaing Township, Mandalay Region”.
H.E. Mr. Mikio NUMATA, Ambassador Designate of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and U Kyaw Khwe, Chairman of Kangyi Village Primary School Construction Committee, signed the grant contract on January 10, 2013.
Kangyi Village located at two miles east of Mahlaing Town in Meiktila District and Kangyi Village Primary School was constructed and opened in 1968 by the collective effort of the villagers. Although school building was built of bamboo and thatch at the beginning, some private well-wishers and villagers renovated the building in 1978 with corrugated iron sheet roofing and brick walling. Additional building was also built.
Because of the school construction committee’s budget constraint, floor of the one-storeyed buildings were unpaved and students are learning their lessons on the natural ground. Door and window leaves also could not be fixed to the building. Although the level of the general appearance and security of the school building is said to be about 60%, more than 211 students are attending the classes at school under 6 teachers.
Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a 100’x30’ one-storeyed R.C. school building, toilets, walkway and school furniture for Kangyi Village Primary School through its GGP Programme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students with better learning and sanitation environment, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
