The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has decided to extend an assistance ofUS$108,221for a humanitarian assistance program entitled “The Project for Construction of Buddha Yaungchi Monastic Post Primary School in Danuphyu Township, Ayeyarwady Region”.
H.E. Mr.Mikio NUMATA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and U Thein Hlaing, Chairman of Hlay Lan Village Buddha Yaungchi Monastic Post Primary School Management Committee, signed the grant contract on January 22, 2013.
Buddha Yaungchi Monastic Primary School opened in 2003 at a monastery in Hlay Lan Village with a teacher monk and four voluntary teachers by using the building of Monastery as the class-rooms. In order to provide basic education and religious teaching, it opened for the children of poor families and who cannot afford to attend the government schools.
By the efforts of the village people, in 2006, the school was upgraded and recognized as the Post Primary School by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Since the numbers of student at school were gradually increasing, the School Management Committee constructed a hall-typed school building in 2009 by the contribution of village people. At present, 184 students are studying with 10 teachers by using the various religious buildings of the Buddha Yaungchi Monastery due to lack of enough space. Although, the Sayadaw(Chief Monk), the School Management Committee and village people were seeking to construct a new school building, they, mostly low-income families, are facing financial difficulties.
Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a120’x30’ RC school building, toilets, and school furniture for Hlay Lan Village Buddha Yaungchi Monastic Post Primary School in Danuphyu Township through its GGP Scheme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students with better learning and sanitation environment and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
