February 7, 2013

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects(GGP) Scheme, granted for two humanitarian programs namely: US$99,666 for construction of Phayargyi Village Basic Education High School (Branch) and US$ 106,182 for construction of KalihtawYeKyaw Basic Education Post Primary School both in Twante Township of Yangon Region. The hand-over ceremony and opening ceremony of each school was held on 5 February2013at the respective project sites in each village.

Mr. Kiyotomi TADA, Second Secretary of the Japanese Embassy, U Myint Soe, Director of the Department of Basic Education No.3, Twante Township Education Officer, Village Administrators, respective school management committee members and local people attended the ceremonies.

Phayargyi Village Basic Education High School(Branch) originally opened in 1953 as Basic Education Primary School. It was upgraded as the Basic Education High School in 2011 and about 900 students are studying with 25 teachers by using four school buildings and two temporary school buildings. Since each classroom has about 90 students, they have been studying under non-ideal condition.

KalihtawYe Kyaw Basic Education Post Primary School originally opened in 1975 as Basic Education Primary School and it has been upgraded as Post Primary School in 2009. More than two hundred students are studying with five teachers by using two school buildings. The learning environment for the students is worse due to the lack of enough spaces and furniture for classrooms in the old buildings. Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for construction of50’x32’ two storied RC school building with 4 classrooms and school furniture for Phayargyi Village Basic Education High School (branch) and for construction of 60’x30’one storied RC school building with 3 classrooms, toilets and school furniture for Kalihtaw Ye Kyaw Basic Education Post Primary School respectively through its GGP Scheme.

It is expected that this assistances will provide the students and teachers with better learning and sanitation environment and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
