
The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP)Scheme, has decided to extend assistance totallingUS$426,288 for humanitarian assistance program for construction of one village water supply system in Yangon Region, two in Magway Region and one Basic Education Middle School in Kayah State.
H.E.Mr.Mikio NUMATA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and each Chairman of Water Supply System Implementation Committee and School Building Construction Committee signed the grant contracts on February 21,2013.
The grant assistances funded by the GGP Scheme and grant contracts signed are:-
1) US$110,545for construction of Kyaw Ywa Village Water Supply System in Myaing Township, Magway Region
2) US$85,029 for construction of Taungtha Village Water Supply System in Chauk Township, Magway Region
3) US$110,587forconstruction of Kyungale Village Water Supply System in Kawthmu Township, Yangon Region
4) US$120,127forconstruction of Lawdalay Basic Education Middle School in Loikaw Township, Kayah State
Kyungale Village in Kawthmu Township was suffering shortage of drinking and domestic water in dry season; and Kyaw Ywa Village in Myaing Township and Taungtha Village in Chauk Township are also suffering same problem making the people to share some time for fetching water from nearby villages and to use certain portion of their earnings for purchasing water. Lawdalay Basic Education Middle School in Loikaw Township, having about 400 students and teachers, is in urgent needs to have a new school building and school toilets to replace with the aging buildings.
Although each committee was seeking opportunity to fulfill their needs to solve the problems of villagers and students, they have been facing financial difficulties. Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for construction of the said projects.
It is expected that these assistances will provide the grass-roots people of the water scarce villages near Yangon and in the central dry zone with safe drinking and domestic water and students of one village in Kayah State with better learning and sanitation environment and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
