The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects GGP Scheme, granted USD89,078 for a humanitarian assistant program entitled “The Project for Construction of Min Kyaung Monastic Post Primary School in Rakhine State’’ in the fiscal year 2011.The hand-over and opening ceremony was held at the project site in Sittwe on July 5, 2013.

The said ceremony was attended by Ms. Sumie ARIMA, the Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Thar Nyunt, Vice Chairperson of Rakhine State Hluttaw, Dr.Aung Kyaw Min, Minister for Social Affairs, U Tha Lu Chay, Minister for Electric Power and Industry, U Aung Than Tin, Minister for Forestry and Mines of Rakhine State Govenment, school building construction committee members headed by Chief Monk Sayadaw, students of the schools and local people.

Min Kyaung monastic post primary school was founded in 1998 by using a monastic building with the purpose of providing systematic free education to the children of poor families who cannot access formal education. Since, the number of students has been gradually increasing, the students have been facing problem with inadequate spaces in the religious place. Moreover some buildings became outdated gradually and the school needs new building urgently in this situation. Despite School Committee’s best endeavor to build the new building, this plan cannot be implemented because of villagers’ financial situation.

In such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of one-storey reinforced concrete school building, toilets, walkway and school furniture for Min Kyaung Monastic Post Primary School through its GGP scheme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students with better learning and sanitation environment and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
