THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR GRASS-ROOTS HUMAN SECURITY PROJECTS FOR “THE PROJECT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF KWET THIT BASIC EDUCATION POST PRIMARY SCHOOL IN HMAWBI TOWNSHIP, YANGON REGION”
August 28, 2013

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has decided to extend an assistance of US$116,434 for a humanitarian assistance programme entitled “The Project for Construction of Kwet Thit Basic Education Post Primary School in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region”.

H.E. Mr. Mikio NUMATA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and U Aye Ko, Chairman of Kwet Thit Basic Education Post Primary School Construction Committee, signed the grant contract on August 28, 2013.

Kwet Thit Basic Education Post Primary School in No. 4 Ward of Hmawbi was opened in 1968. The school was constructed in 1992 and 1993 with brick nog structures and the buildings became aged gradually and were also damaged by Cyclone Nargis in 2008. The school is situated on low ground and inundated in rainy seasons. Under such conditions, the students’ learning environment is very poor. To solve this problem, the School Construction Committee was seeking to construct a new school building, while facing financial difficulties.

Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan has decided to provide funding for the construction of a 70’x30’ two-storeyed R.C. school building, toilets and school furniture for Kwet Thit Basic Education Post Primary School through its GGP Programme. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students with better learning and sanitation environment, and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar. The Embassy of Japan has helped Myanmar with 270 school buildings since 1998 under GGP scheme.
