The opening and hand-over ceremonies took place in Sagaing and Magway Region for the newly constructed Water Supply Systems on 12,13 and 14 September 2013 respectively totaling US$212,038. The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects(GGP) Scheme, granted as following projects:

  • 2. “The Project for Construction of Kyaw Ywa Village Water Supply System in Myaing Township in Magway Region”, US$110,545 and
  • 3. “The Project for Construction of Taung Thar Village Water Supply System in Chauk Township in Magway Region” , US$85,029.
Mr. Go NAKAYA, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan and respective township administrative officials, departmental officials, committee chairmen and committee members of each water supply project, and local residents attended the ceremonies at each occasion. At the opening ceremony of Parami Water Supply System, U Tint Hlaing Myint, Development Affairs Minister of Sagaing Region Government also attended together with the departmental officials of Sagaing Region.
Parami Ward, newly expanded and established in 1990, which is currently situated in the middle part of Sagaing City is about one and half miles away from the Ayeyarwady River at the western side of Sagaing Mountain Range. Residents in this Parami Ward have to rely on tube wells which are not only producing drinking water of high lime content but also not sufficient domestic water in dry seasons. Ward dwellers are spending the money to purchase good quality drinking water throughout a year.
Kyaw Ywa Village in Myaing Township and Taung Thar Village in Chauk Township are also suffering shortage of drinking and domestic water almost every year especially in dry seasons. Due to the shortage, people have to spare their time everyday for fetching water from nearby villages and to spend certain portion of their earnings for purchasing water. The shortage of water in the village hindered the development of the villages in their education, health and socio-economic activities. Moreover, the shortage of water also effects the cattle in each village in summer time.
In order to help provide better access to safe and drinkable water, the Government of Japan granted, under the GGP scheme, the necessary funds for construction of pumping station on the bank of Ayeyarwady River, fixing ground tank and main distribution pipeline for Parami Water Supply System and for construction of water pond, installation of solar panel and water pumping system and water distribution pipeline to the village at Kyaw Ywa and Taung Thar Water Supply Projects. It is expected that these assistance in water supply system will contribute to all-round development of local people in three townships enabling residents to have better access to safe and sustainable water, and will further strengthen existing friendly relation between Japan and Myanmar.
