THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRANT ASSISTANCE FOR THREE GRASS-ROOTS HUMAN SECURITY RPOJECTS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF SCHOOLS IN MAGWAY AND BAGO REGIONS AND RENOVATION AND UPGRADING OF A SMALL DAM IN KAYAH STATE
October 10, 2013
The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has decided to provide the grant amounting to US$ 295,228 to three projects listed below.
- (1) The Project for Construction of Kyaiksakaw Village Basic Education Branch Middle School in Daik U Township, Bago Region, US$ 100,544.
- (2) The Project for Construction of Yadanar Thainkha Monastic Post Primary School in Myo Khin Thar Village, Pakokku Township, Magway Region, US$ 96,076.
- (3) The Project for Renovation and Upgrading of Naung Lone Dam in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, US$ 98,608.
H.E. Mr. Mikio NUMATA, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairmen of Committees of three projects signed the grant contracts on October 10, 2013.
The schools of those projects are not able to provide good learning environment for the students due to insufficient classrooms and deteriorated buildings. Therefore, respective school committees had been seeking financial support to construct new school buildings to improve their current situations. It is expected that these projects will provide more than 1,300 students at two needy schools with better learning and sanitation environment.
Naung Lone Dam, situated in Htee Se Khar Village Tract, cannot be effectively utilized at the moment. Therefore, this project is to renovate and upgrade the dam to increase the storage capacity and to have properly designed appurtenant structures such as spillway, inlet structure and irrigation canal. It is estimated that the dam can supply water for irrigation to 420 acres of paddy land downstream and for domestic use to 7 villages near the dam throughout a year.
The Government of Japan has helped various grass-roots projects in Myanmar. 271 schools have been improved and Naung Lone Dam has become the first project of this kind in Myanmar since 1998 under GGP scheme.
It is further expected to strengthen existing friendly relation between Japan and Myanmar through implementation of those projects.
