Hand-over and Opening Ceremony of No.17 Shwe Pyi Village Monastic Primary School and No.13 Taung Inn Village Monastic Primary School in Mandalay Region, through Japan’s Grass-Roots Assistance

The hand-over and opening ceremonies of two monastic schools in Shwe Pyi Village and Taung Inn Village of Singu Township, Mandalay Region took place on December 13, 2013 respectively. Mr.Toshio YAMAMOTO, Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan, respective committee chairmen and committee members of each school construction project and students and local residents attended these ceremonies.


These two schools does not have proper school buildings and the classrooms located mainly at the monastic buildings. The classes are often be cancelled whenever the religious ceremonies are held at the monastery. These two new school buildings through GGP scheme will benefit many students with better learning environment.


At the ceremony, Mr. Yamamoto explained about Terakoya of Japan that during the Edo period in Japan, there was Terakoya where basic writing, reading and calculation were taught. Through the system of Terakoya, the Japanese people had achieved a high degree of literacy rate in the world contributing to the high growth rate in development of Japan. He also mentioned that in Myanmar, education is the key point for its development and the Government of Japan has planned to continue its assistance in education sector of Myanmar in future as well.


The Japanese Government granted USD107,290 for No.17 Shwe Pyi Village Monastic Primary School and USD98,572 for No.13 Taung Inn Village Monastic Primary School. It is expected that this assistance will further strengthen existing friendly relation between Japan and Myanmar.
