THE HAND OVER AND OPENING CEREMONY OF MONASTIC BASIC EDUCATION MIDDLE SCHOOL IN MAGWAY REGION CONSTRUCTED UNDER THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT’S GRANT ASSISTANCE

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, granted USD105,845 for a humanitarian assistant program entitled “The Project for Construction of Kandaw Village No. 4 Monastic Basic Education Middle School in Pakokku Township, Magway Region” in 2012. The hand over and opening ceremony of the new building was held at the school in Kandaw Village on February 2, 2014.
The said ceremony was attended by Mr. Sachio OTAKI, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Khin Maung Nyunt, Chairman of school building construction committee and members headed by Chief Monk Sayadaw, students of the schools and local people.
Kandaw Village Monastic Primary School was established in 1993 for the children of poor families from Kandaw and near-by ten villages. It was recognized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2002. Since the school accepted the students for middle school starting from 1994, it was then recognized as the Monastic Middle School. The number of students also increased gradually and at present more than 550 students are studying at the school.
However, the school lacks enough space for teaching and learning, at present, students are using various religious buildings of Kandaw Monastery. Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan provided funding for the construction of two storeyed RC school building with 8 classrooms and provision of school furniture through its GGP Scheme.
Japan has built 279 schools under the GGP scheme since 1993. It is expected that this assistance will provide the students of Kandaw Village and ten near-by villages with better learning environment and further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
