The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has extended the assistance totaling US$ 342,733 in 2012 for three humanitarian assistance programs entitled:
1. “The Project for Construction of Community Bridge between Inn Hmi and Ywa Gyi Villages in Kalaw Township, Shan State”, US$120,159
2. “The Project for Construction of Nwar La Woe Village Tract Basic Education Middle School in Loikaw Township, Kayah State”,US$102,447
3. “The Project for Construction of Lawdalay Village Basic Education Middle School in Loikaw Township, Kayah State”, US$120,127
The hand-over and opening ceremonies of one community bridge and two middle schools were held at each location in Shan State and Kayah State on 18 and 19 February 2014 respectively. Mr. Toshihiro WATANABE, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, respective committee chairmen and committee members of each construction project, students and local residents attended those ceremonies.At the opening ceremony of Community Bridge between Inn Hmi and Ywa Gyi Villages, U Sai Naw Kham, Minister for Transport of Shan State attended and at the two opening ceremonies of Kayah State, U Saw Hu Hu, Minister for Electric Power and Industry of Kayah State attended together with the departmental officials.
The community bridge between Inn Hmi and Ywa Gyi Villages will benefit about 11,000 populaion who are facing difficulties in social-economic situation due to deterioted wooden bridge. The two middle school construction projects in Lawdalay Village and Nwar La Woe Village in Loikaw Township in Kayah State will benefit around 850 students, who are now studying under insufficient learning environment in old buildings.
Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan provided funding for one reinforced concrete bridge and two school buildings including toilets and necessary furniture through its GGP Scheme. The Government of Japan has helped 667 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under this GGP scheme since 1993. Among them, 299 education projects, 170 health care projects, 133 public welfare and environment projects, 30 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects are included. It is expected that these assistance will further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
