The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has extended the assistance totaling US$ 231,162 in 2012 for two humanitarian assistance programs entitled:-
1. “The Project for Construction of Myeik Taung Basic Education Post Primary School
in Myeik Township, Taninthari Region ”, US$123,408
2. “The Project for Construction of Primary School No.7 in Palaw Township, Taninthari Region”, US$107,754
The hand-over and opening ceremonies of the newly constructed two primary school buildings were held at each location in Taninthari Region on 19 and 20 February 2014 respectively. Mr. Kei MAEDA, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, respective District Administrator and Township Administrator, Township Education Officers, Committee chairmen and committee members of each construction project, students and local residents attended those ceremonies.
The two primary school projects in Myeik Township and Palaw Township in Taninthari Region will benefit around 1,000 students, who are now studying under insufficient learning environment in old buildings.
Under such circumstances, the Government of Japan provided funding for reinforced concrete school buildings and necessary furniture at those buildings through its GGP Scheme. The Government of Japan has helped 667 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under this GGP scheme since 1993. Among them, 299 education projects, 170 health care projects, 133 public
welfare and environment projects, 30 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects are included. It is expected that these assistances will further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar which falls 60th aniversity of the establishment of diplomatic relations in this year.
