The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has extended the assistance totaling US$ 121,699 for a humanitarian assistance program entitled:-
“The Project for Construction of Transit Shelter for Human Trafficking Victims in Kawthoung Township, Taninthari Region’’
The hand-over and opening ceremony of Transit Shelter for Human Trafficking Victims in Kawthoung Township, Taninthari Region was held on 24th April 2014. Mr.Hisanaga Tomioka, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan, Police Brig-General Win Naing Tun, committee chairman and committee members of the shelter and local residents attended this ceremony.
The Transit Shelter for human trafficking victims in Kawthoung Township will benefit about 100 human trafficking victims per year from Thai-Myanmar Border who are using temporary buildings such as old hospital and monasteries for physical and mental encouragement that is arranged by Task Force for Anti-Trafficking in Persons of Kawthoung.
Under such circumstances, the Governement of Japan provided funding for constructing transit shelter for human trafficking victims through its GGP Scheme. Japan has conducted 688 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under this GGP scheme since 1993. Among them, 311 education projects, 175 health care projects, 136 public welfare and environment projects, 31 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects are included. It is expected that these assistance will further strengthen existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar, which marks 60 years anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.
