1st Inauguration of Japan’s Yen Loan Project for Rural Development in Taunggyi

On 22 October 2015, the 1st ceremony of inauguration of the Yen Loan Projects for Local Infrastructure Development took place in Taunggyi, Shan State.

The Government of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have been engaged in development of key local infrastructure and poverty reduction of Myanmar, following the bilateral agreement signed on 26 May 2013, when His Excellency Mr. ABE, Prime Minister of Japan made his 1st official visit to Myanmar. This ODA Loan Project amounts to JPY 17 billion (approximately USD 170 million) and is the 1st package of Japan’s ODA Loan Projects to Myanmar.

The project aims to newly build and rehabilitate basic infrastructure, namely roads, electricity, water supply, in every region and state. 65 sub-projects are in progress and expected to be completed soon in each region and state.

In Taunggyi, local residents and distinguished guests represented by His Excellency U Saut Aung Myat, Chief Minister of Shan State and His Excellency U Sai Hla Win, Minister of Shan State Development Committee, celebrated the newly built water treatment center in Nar Yaung. Mr. FUJIKAWA, second secretary of the Embassy of Japan and Mr. TOKUSHIGE, JICA staff joined to the ceremony. Thanks to this sub-project for water extension of Taunggyi City, the number of households having access to water supply will be doubled to 5,126.

The Government of Japan is willing to further contribute to the poverty reduction and improvement of livelihoods of the Myanmar people both in urban and rural areas. Japan believes such cooperation will help Myanmar to fulfill its vast potential, thus realize inclusive growth and balanced economy in this country.
