
JAPAN GRANTS US$610,317 FOR NON REVENUE WATER REDUCTION IN MAYANGON TOWNSHIP, YANGON

The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$610,317 for a humanitarian assistance program “The Project for NRW (Non Revenue Water) Reduction in Mayangon Township, Yangon Region”.The handover and opening ceremony of the project took place at Myaing Hay Wun Garden, Mayangon Township, Yangon Region on 30th October 2015. H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, H.E. U Hla Myint, Mayor of Yangon, U Soe Si, Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) Member No.5, Dr. Atsushi MASUKO, President of TSS Tokyo Water Co., Ltd, Mr. Shinichi YOSHIDA, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Tokyo Waterworks, and Representatives from Toyo Engineering Corporation and Mitsui & Co., Ltd attended the ceremony.
An around-the-clock and stable water supply system is essential for the lives of people as well as for the industry. According to the survey data in 2012, Mayangon Township has the largest number of leakage repairs in Yangon Region. To improve such situation, the Japanese Government in cooperation with Japan Consortium supported the installation of required equipment and materials, the renovation of the water supply network, the installation of an efficient water cleaning system, and the maintenance training for YCDC counterpart engineers.
TheGovernment of Japan has assisted 731 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993; the number consisting of 331 education projects, 192 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 35 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
