JAPAN GRANTS US$472,521 FOR FOUR HEALTH AND EDUCATION PROJECTS IN KACHIN STATE, MANDALAY AND AYEYARWADY REGIONS
December 4, 2015

H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, and Chairmen of the Committees from the State and Regions concerned, signed the grant contracts for four projects today. Under these contracts, Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme will provide a total of US$472,521 as below:

1. The Project for Construction of Prosthetic Orthotic Building in Mandalay Orthopedic Hospital, Chan Mya Tharsi Township, Mandalay Region (US$98,252);
2. The Project for Construction of Ye Na Thar Village Monastic Post Primary School in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region (US$90,104);
3. The Project for Construction of Moe Mauk Basic Education High School in Moe Mauk Township, Kachin State (US$150,597); and
4. The Project for Construction of Kwin Kauk Basic Education High School in Ingapu Township, Ayeyarwady Region (US$133,568).

The Mandalay Orthopedic Hospital has no Prosthetic Orthotic Building and the amputees are transferred to the Yangon Orthopedic Hospital to obtain support devices and eligible training. Under such conditions, the Japanese Government, under its GGP scheme, will support a Prosthetic Orthotic Building in Mandalay Orthopedic Hospital.

There is no school building at Ye Nandar Village Monastic Post Primary School in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region. The students have to study in the pavilions and monastic buildings, and they have to study under shade of trees when there are religious events. Under such conditions, the Japanese Government will support a two-storey R.C.C building with 6 classrooms, full furniture and 5 lavatories. The project will benefit 456 students of the school.

The students from nearby villages and those from 9 IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps are relying on Moe Mauk Basic Education High School in Moe Mauk Township, Kachin State. The existing buildings cannot cover the classroom needs of the increasing students. The students are studying in very congested classrooms: 64 to 90 students in one classroom. Under such conditions, the Japanese Government will support a two-storey R.C.C building with 8 classrooms and full furniture. The project will benefit 1,848 students of the school.

Kwin Kauk Basic Education High School is located in Kwin Kauk Village, Ingapu Township, Ayeyarwady Region. There are 5 school buildings in the school compound and among them, one building has collapsed due to aging. The existing classrooms cannot cover the classroom needs of the students. Under such condition, the Japanese Government will support a two-storey R.C.C building with 8 classrooms, full furniture and 6 lavatories. The project will benefit 1,727 students of the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 738 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993; the number consisting of 336 education projects, 193 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 36 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
