JAPAN GRANTS US$614,694 FOR TWO SCHOOLS AND ONE HOSPITAL IN MUSE, KUN LONG AND LASHIO TOWNSHIPS, SHAN STATE
February 8, 2016

The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$614,694 for the following humanitarian assistance programs:

1) The Project for Construction of Kanbawza Theingi No.1 Nunnery School in Muse Township, Shan State (US$174,753);
2) The Project for Construction of Kun Long Basic Education High School in Kun Long Township, Shan State (US$246,047); and
3) The Project for Construction of Isolation Unit Building at Lashio General Hospital in Lashio Township, Shan State (US$193,894).

The handover ceremonies of the projects took place in Muse, Kun Long and Lashio Townships, Shan State on 6th, 7th and 8th February 2016 respectively. Mr. Masaki YASUMATSU, Counselor of the Embassy of Japan, U Kyaw Kyaw Tun, Muse District Administrator, U Minn Swe, Kun Long Township Administrator, Dr. Dipa, Senior Medical Superintendent of Lashio General Hospital, Committee Chairmen, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.

There were not enough classrooms to accommodate the increasing number of students in Kawbawza Theingi Nunnery School. Some of the students had to study in nunnery buildings near the school. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C building with 8 classrooms with full furniture. The project will benefit 789 students of the school.

The school buildings in Kun Long Basic Education High School were deteriorated and the existing classrooms could not cover the classroom need. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C building with 10 classrooms, full furniture and lavatories.

In Lashio General Hospital, HIV patients used to be admitted in general patients’ ward since there was no separate building for them. The Construction of Isolation Unit Building for HIV patients and medical equipment, provided by the Japanese Government, will benefit 1,753,632 local residents of the 26 townships.

The Government of Japan has assisted 747 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993; the number consisting of 345 education projects, 193 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 36 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
