February 9, 2016

H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, and Chairmen of the Committees from the Region and State concerned, signed the grant contracts for three projects today. Under these contracts, Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme will provide a total of US$264,955 as below:

1. The Project for Construction of Kun Taung Village Rural Health Center in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State (US$ 101,335);
2. The Project for Construction of Htan Gone Village Basic Education Primary School in Gyobingauk Township, Bago Region (US$ 81,111); and
3. The Project for Construction of Min Oh Village Basic Education Primary School in Gyobingauk Township, Bago Region (US$ 82,509);

Though Kun Taung Village Rural Health Center plays a key role in delivering medical services for the surrounding 29 villages in Ponnagyun Township, its building had been worn down and was not in an appropriate condition for patients. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government will support construction of an one-storey R.C.C rural health center building, one staff quarter with furniture and medical equipment. The project will benefit 23,248 residents in the township.

Due to the flood which occurred in July 2015, the school buildings of Htan Gone Village Basic Education Primary School were seriously damaged and the students were exposed to rain and wind while studying. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government will support construction of an one-storey R.C.C building with 5 classrooms, full furniture, walkway and lavatories. The project will benefit 70 students at the school.

Min Oh Basic Education Primary School was affected by the flood in July 2015. One of their existing school buildings become irreparable while rehabilitating another building was too expensive for the school to bear. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government will support construction of an one-storey R.C.C building with 5 classrooms, full furniture, walkway and lavatories. The project will benefit 86 students of the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 750 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993; the number consisting of 347 education projects, 194 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 36 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
