The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$839,321 for the following humanitarian assistance programs:

1) The Project for Construction of Mya Kan Thar Basic Education Primary School in Hopin Sub-Township, Kachin State (US$221,689);
2) The Project for Construction of Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward at Bamaw General Hospital in Bamaw Township, Kachin State (US$221,737); and
3) The Project for Construction of No.1 Basic Education High School in Bamaw Township, Kachin State (US$395,895).

The handover ceremonies of the projects took place in Hopin Sub-Township and Bamaw Township, Kachin State on 5th and 7th March 2016 respectively. Mr. Kazuyoshi SUZUKI, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Sein Myint, Bamaw District Administrator, U Win Maung, Mohnyin District Education Officer, Committee Chairpersons, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.

Mya Kan Thar Basic Education Post Primary School in Hopin Sub-Township has four school buildings that were built with used timber. The structures of the buildings were not strong enough and not in a suitable condition for students. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C building with 10 classrooms with full furniture. The project will benefit 270 students of the school.

No.1 Basic Education High School is the most historic school in Bamaw Township which was built in 1946 and plays key role in educating students from surrounding IDP camps. While the school has eight buildings, four buildings are aged, decayed and not in use as safety is not secured. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of two two-storey R.C.C buildings with 10 classrooms and 8 classrooms each with full furniture. The project will benefit 2,638 students of the school.

Bamaw General Hospital provides a wide range of medical services in Bamaw Township. However, the hospital does not have an independent ward for pregnant patients and faces a difficulty in securing a place for treatment. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a two-storey Obstetrics and Gynecology ward with full medical equipment. The project will benefit 118,470 residents in the surrounding region.

The Government of Japan has assisted 760 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993; the number consisting of 356 education projects, 195 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 36 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
