JAPAN GRANTS US$414,571 FOR TWO SCHOOLS IN HAKA TOWNSHIP, CHIN STATE AND KALAY TOWNSHIP, SAGAING REGION

The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$414,571 for the following humanitarian assistance programs:

1) The Project for Construction of Chin Oo See Basic Education Branch Middle School in Haka Township, Chin State (US$298,991) and
2) The Project for Construction of Kan Oo Village Basic Education Branch Middle School in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region (US$115,580).

The handover ceremonies of the projects took place in Haka Township, Chin State and Kalay Township, Sagaing Region on 18th and 19th March 2016 respectively. Mr. Sachio OTAKI, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Hong Ngai, Chin State Chief Minister, U Zo Bawi, Speaker of State Parliament, Dr. Ba Maung, Chin State Minister for Social Affairs, U Ram Mang, Chin State Minister for Planning and Economics, U Yam Tawng, Chin State Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Breeding, U Ning Nang, Chin State Minister for Development Affairs, U Kyaw Kyaw, Chin State Minister for Security and Border Affairs, U Kyaw Ning, Chin State Minister for Forestry and Mines, Daw Khin Thet Htwe, Assistant Director of Sagaing Region Education Department, U Aung Zaw Moe, Kalay District Administrator, Daw Thi Thi, Assistant Director of Kalay District Education Department, Committee Chairpersons, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.

Chin Oo See Schoo is the only Basic Education Middle School in Haka Township. Since the existing building was demolished in 2013, the students had been transferred to other schools which are located far away.Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C building with 8 classrooms, lavatories and full furniture. The project will benefit 604 students who are ethnic Chin people.

There were two buildings in Kan Oo Village Basic Education Branch Middle School. Both buildings were not safe conditions for students to students in. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a one-storey R.C.C building with 5 classrooms, lavatories and full furniture. The project will benefit 270 students of the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 765 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993: the number consisting of 361 education projects, 195 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 36 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
