
Japan Grants a total of US$28.16 million for 4 Projects
on Economic Development of Myanmar

On Tuesday, 2 June, ceremonies to exchange notes took place for 4 grant aid projects worth ¥3.069 billion (approximately US$28.16 million) in Nay Pyi Taw.
1. H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and U Tun Tun Naing, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Finance of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar signed documents for three projects which will provide assistance for scholarship to study in Japan, control of foot-and mouth disease, and procurement of disaster relief machinery.
(1) The Project for Human Respurce Development Scholarship
(Grant amount: ¥594 million (approx. US$5.45 million))
This project will assist young leaders from public and private sectors in Myanmar to obtain Master's degrees or PhD degrees in Japan, contributing to the resolution of Myanmar’s various development challenges, and further strengthening the friendship between the two countries through enhancing people-to-people ties.

(2) The Project for Improvement of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Control
(Grant amount: ¥1.417 billion (approx. US$13.00 million))
This project aims to provide facilities and machines for diagnosis of and the production of vaccines against Foot-and-Mouth Disease of bovine and swine to the National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Research Institute in Yangon and to reinforce the capability of the Institute in foot-and-mouth disease control, leading to the stability of agriculture and livestock production in the country, contributing the improvement of livelioods in Myanmar.

(3) The Project for The Economic and Social Development Programme
(Grant amount: ¥945 million (approx. US$8.67 million))
This project will provide machines for infrastructure and aims to improve capability of the Myanmar Government to cope with natural disasters, assiting the improvement of economic and social development in Myanmar.

2. H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Mr. Toily KURBANOV, Country Director of UNDP Myanmar, exchanged notes to enhance understanding of the Rule of Law in Myanmar.

(Grant amount: ¥113 million (approx. US$1.04 million))
This Programme will train lawyers, local representataives and local residents in “Rule of Law Centres” in Myanmar. This aims to enhance understanding of rights and obligations under the rule of law, contributing to building the capacity of the human resources who form the basis of Myanmar economy and society and to improving the trust towards the social system, fostering democritizaiton.
