September 20, 2016

The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$799,666 for
1) The Project for Construction of Hpa-an No.2 Basic Education Post Primary School in Hpa-an Township, Kayin State (US$222,913) and
2) The Project for Construction of Operation Theatre Building for Myawaddy Hospital, Myawaddy Township, Kayin State (US$576,753).

The handover ceremonies of the projects took place in Hpa-an Township and Myawaddy Township on 19th and 20th September 2016 respectively. Mr. Nobutoshi HATANO, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, Dr. Tin Win Kyaw, Kayin State Social Affair Minister, Dr. Myat Wunna Soe, Deputy Director of Ministry of Health, U Min Ohn Wai, Deputy Director of State Education Department, Committee Chairpersons, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.

A school building in Hpa-an No.2 Basic Education Post Primary School had been made of cheap wood, and deteriorated badly. Moreover, the building had been also damaged by flood several times. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government, under its GGP scheme, provided funding for construction of a 180’x30’ one-storey R.C.C building and a 120’x30’ one-storey R.C.C building with lavatories and full furniture. The project will benefit 530 students of the school.

Myawaddy Hospital, located in the Myanmar-Thailand border area, provides healthcare services not only for the residents but also for the migrant workers, the returnees from Thailand and the needy patients in the area. However, the patients have not been well treated because of inappropriate conditions of operation rooms. Furthermore, the existing medical items were getting deteriorated and not functioning well. Under such circumstances, the Japanese Government, under its GGP scheme, provided funding for construction of an Operation Theatre Building with full medical equipment and furniture. The project will benefit 107,146 residents in the area, a significant number of migrant workers and returnees from Thailand.

The Government of Japan has assisted 774 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993: the number consisting of 367 education projects, 196 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 38 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
