JAPAN GRANTS US$365,427 FOR ONE SCHOOL AND TWO RURAL HEALTH CENTERS IN KAYAH STATE
December 10, 2016

The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$365,427 for 3 projects in Kayah State:

1) The Project for Construction of Loilen lay Village Basic Education High School in Loikaw Township (US$125,394)
2) The Project for Construction of Sub Rural Health Center in Sin Taung Village, De Maw So Township (US$82,397) and
3) The Project for Construction of Rural Health Center in Mei Se Nan Village, Mese Township (157,636).

The handover ceremonies of the projects took place in Loikaw Township, De Maw So Township and Mese Township on 9th and 10th December 2016 respectively. Mr. Yusuke MATSUOKA, First Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Al Phaung Sho, Kayah State Chief Minister, Dr.Aung Kyaw Htay, Kayah State Minister for Development and Social Affairs, Committee Chairpersons, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.

As the number of students had significantly increased recently, Loilen Lay Village Basic Education High School was struggling to accommodate them. In addition, the condition of one of the main buildings was getting worse due to its age and students were exposed to wind and rain for over years. To tackle this issue, the Japanese Government, under its GGP scheme, provided funding for construction of a 92’x30’ two-storey Reinforced Concrete Construction (R.C.C.) building with full furniture. The project will benefit 1,497 students and 41 teachers of the school.

The sub rural health center building in Sin Taung Village built by self-reliance was decayed due to its age and has not been used for long time. As any other building was not available in the village, one of the village offices had been used for medical treatment which is not spacious enough to accommodate patients and is also not well equipped. In order to solve this issue, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a one-storey R.C.C. Sub Rural Health Center (SRHC) building and a staff quarter with full furniture and 7 items of medical equipment. The project will benefit 3,985 residents of 4 villages.

Similarly, the rural health center building of Mei Se Nan Village built in 1991, was aged and rusted. In addition, as the center has no delivery room, the delivery cannot be done at the center, where the center can play an important role. To address the problem, the Japanese Government provided funding for construction of a one-storey R.C.C.RHC building and a staff quarter with full furniture and 18 items of medical equipment. The project will benefit 2,238 residents of 18 villages.

The Government of Japan has assisted 801 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993: the number consisting of 391 education projects, 198 healthcare projects, 138 public welfare and environment projects, 41 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
