
On 9 March 2017, H.E. Mr. Tateshi HIGUCHI, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and Mr. Nicholas George, Director a.i., UNOPS Myanmar, signed the Exchanged of Notes in Yangon to grant 487 million Japanese yen (approximately 4.2 million US dollars) for “the Project for Supporting National Reconciliation and Peacebuilding Process”.
This grant through UNOPS supports to promote reconciliation and peace process between the Government and Ethnic Armed Organizations, to contribute to the stabilization and sustainable development in Myanmar.
In the meeting in Tokyo between Mr. Shinzo ABE H.E. Prime Minister of Japan and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi H.E. State Counsellor in November 2016, Mr. Abe pledged to support national reconciliation and peace process, which is the top priority of the current Myanmar government. The grant is a part of the plan to provide assistance totally 40 billion Japanese Yen for the next 5 years by Japan to Myanmar for the development of ethnic areas for the next 5 years.
