The Japanese Government, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$297,068 for
1) The Project for Construction of Nat Gyi Kone Village Basic Education Post Primary School in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region (US$131,334),
2) The Project for Construction of Kyauk Kar Village Basic Education Post Primary School in Kalay Township, Sagaing Region (US$78,380) and
3) The Project for Construction of Sa Kyin Monastic Post Primary School in Madaya Township, Mandalay Region (US$87,354).

The handover ceremonies of the above 3 projects took place in Nat Gyi Kone and Kyauk Kar Villages in Kalay Township and Sa Kyin Village in Madaya Township on 29th and 30th June 2017, respectively. Mr. Keita IWASE, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, Chief Minister of Mandalay Region, Committee Chairpersons, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies. Due to the flood in 2015, one of the school buildings in Nat Gyi Kone Village Basic Education Post Primary School had been seriously damaged. Although a temporary school building was constructed, many of students had been studying in congested classrooms, due to the insufficient number of classrooms. In order to provide a secure educational environment, the Government of Japan provided funding for construction of a two-storey Reinforced Concrete Construction (R.C.C.) building with 8 classrooms and full furniture. The project will benefit 301 students of the school.

Similarly, a school building in Kyauk Kar Village Basic Education Post Primary School had been washed away and another building had been deteriorated by the flood in 2015. However, the students had been studying in that deteriorated building, due to the lack of school building. In order to secure a proper learning environment, the Government of Japan provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C. building with 4 classrooms and full furniture. The project will benefit 164 students of the school.

Due to the lack of school building, over 170 students in Sa Kyin Monastic Post Primary School had been studying at one hall of the monastery without partitions. Moreover, some of the students had been studying in outdoor rest area for visitors with exposure to wind and rain, and others had been studying under the tree. In order to tackle these challenges, the Government of Japan provided funding for construction of a two-storey R.C.C. building with 6 classrooms, full furniture, and 4 lavatories. The project will benefit 408 students of the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 823 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993: the number consisting of 400 education projects, 199 healthcare projects, 139 public welfare and environment projects, 50 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is anticipated that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
