The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US $147,892 for the Project for Construction of Thone Gwa Village Basic Education High School in Daik-U Township, Bago Region.
The handover ceremony of a school for the above project took place in Daik-U Township, Bago Region on 22 January 2019. Ms. Atsuko KUSUNOSE, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, U Win Thein, Chief Minister of Bago Region, U Phone Myint Aung, Pyithu Hluttaw elected representative for Daik-U Constituency (1), Bago Region, committee chairperson, committee members of the construction projects, and local residents attended the ceremonies.
In Thone Gwa Village Basic Education High School, there were five school buildings. However, since those buildings were not sufficient to accommodate all students, around 80 students were studying at the space under the eaves of the school building with exposure to rain and wind during the class. In addition, more than 40 students were studying in a neighboring religious facility. In order to secure a proper learning environment, the Government of Japan provided funding for construction of a two-storey reinforced concrete building with 10 classrooms with full furniture. The project benefits 899 students of the school.
The Government of Japan has assisted 883 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993, including 453 education projects, 200 healthcare projects, 140 public welfare and environment projects, 55 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is expected that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
