Exchange of Notes on Grant Aid to Myanmar “the Project for the Urgent Improvement of Solid Waste Management in Yangon City”

1. On February 18, 2019, H.E. Mr. Ichiro MARUYAMA, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, and Sir. Bijay Karmacharya, Country Programme Manager, UN-Habitat Myanmar, exchanged notes concerning the grant aid for the Project for the Urgent Improvement of Solid Waste Management in Yangon City, worth 624 million Japanese Yen (approx 5.5 million USD) in Yangon.

2. In this project, the provision of equipment for the introduction of the Fukuoka method (semi-aerobic landfill system) and the training on the management to Htein Bin final dumpsite in Yangon City where a large-scale fire occurred at the end of April 2018 will be implemented by UN-Habitat in cooperation with Fukuoka City Japan. This project is expected to help improve the lives of people in Yangon by preventing recurrence of fires and by establishing a safe and sustainable waste management system.

3. This project is also expected to help solve the issue of marine plastic litter by prevention of outflow plastic litter to the ocean through establishment the appropriate waste management system.
