JAPAN HANDS OVER A VILLAGE ACCESS ROAD IN AYEYARWADY REGION
5 March 2019

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US$ 157,797 for the Project for Upgrading of Road between Myauk San Village and Yae San Village in Yegyi Township, Ayeyarwady Region.

The handover ceremony of the road for the project took place in Yegyi Township, Ayeyarwady Region on 5 March 2019. Mr. Keisuke Amimoto, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, committee chairperson, committee members of the construction project, and local residents attended the event.

The road has been widely used by residents for commuting, transporting emergency patients, and transporting agricultural crops. However, the road became impassable during rainy seasons which caused challenges among the residents for accessing facilities such as schools and hospitals. In order to tackle this issue, the Government of Japan has provided funding for upgrading the 2.5 kilometer-long road, building of one reinforced concrete bridge and eight pipe culverts. The project will benefit 964 local residents among surrounding villages in this region.

The Government of Japan has assisted 896 various grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993: the number consisting of 460 education projects, 200 healthcare projects, 140 public welfare and environment projects, 61 infrastructure projects and 35 other projects. It is expected that these assistances will further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
