26 March 2019

The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US $123,700 for the Project for Construction of Kyar Ga Yet Basic Education Branch High School in Hinthada Township, Ayeyarwady Region.

The handover ceremony of a school for the above project took place in Hinthada Township, Ayeyarwady Region on 25 March 2019. Ms. Tomoko YOSHIHIRO, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan, U Khin Maung Yee, Pyithu Hluttaw elected representative for Hinthada Constituency, Ayeyarwady Region, committee chairperson, committee members of the construction project and local residents attended the ceremony.

In Kyar Ga Yet Basic Education Branch High School, there were three school buildings. However, since those buildings were not sufficient to accommodate all students, more than 100 students were studying at a temporary hut with exposure to rain and wind during the class. In addition, around 60 students were studying in a neighboring religious facility. In order to secure a proper learning environment, the Government of Japan provided funding for construction of a two-storey reinforced concrete building with 6 classrooms, full furniture and lavatories. The project benefits 433 students and 21 teachers of the school.

The Government of Japan has assisted 904 grass-roots projects, including 467 education projects, 200 healthcare projects, 140 public welfare and environment projects, 61 infrastructure projects and 36 others in Myanmar under the GGP scheme since 1993. This assistance is expected to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
