The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, has granted US $255,342 for:
1) The Project for Construction of Hto Kwi So Village Basic Education Primary School in Hpruso Township, Kayah State (US $101,792) ;
2) The Project for Construction of Lo Khar Lo Village Basic Education Primary School in Hpasawng Township, Kayah State (US $76,257) ; and
3) The Project for Construction of Nan Hu Kone Village Basic Education Primary School in Hpasawng Township, Kayah State (US $77,293).
The handover ceremonies of three schools for the above projects took place in Kayah State from 27th to 29th October 2019. The ceremonies were attended by Dr. Aung Kyaw Htay, Minister for Development and Social Affairs, Kayah State, U Pe Noh, Pyithu Hluttaw elected representative for Hpruso Constituency, Daw Mya Say, Amyothar Hluttaw elected representative for Constituency No.11 in Kayah State, Ms. Ayano Suzuki, Third Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, chairpersons and members of the construction committee, and local residents.
The three schools have faced challenges of lack of classrooms and deterioration of existing buildings. Some students were forced to study in congested space and deteriorating buildings with risks of collapse while some classes experienced disruption by vehicle noise from the road. To provide a safe and spacious learning space for the students and teachers at these schools, the Government of Japan funded the construction of three new school buildings with full furniture and seven lavatory units to benefit approximately 260 students and teachers attending the schools and teachers.
Since 1993, the Government of Japan has assisted 904 grass-roots projects, including 467 education projects, 200 healthcare projects, 140 public welfare and environment projects, 61 infrastructure projects and 36 others in Myanmar under the GGP scheme. The scheme is expected to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar and will continue to support local communities in need.
