The Government of Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Scheme, will provide a total of US $ 4,497,143 (Approximately 6,745 million kyats) to support communities in need in education, health, and environment sectors in five States and six Regions across Myanmar for the Japanese fiscal year of 2019. H.E. Mr. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, and each representative of the recipient organizations have signed grant contracts for the 28 projects listed below during the months of January to March 2020:

The grant includes provisions of emergency/ICU ward and equipment for a general hospital in Rakhine state, garbage compactors for the improvement of waste management in Mandalay city, and 26 school buildings to provide safe and appropriate learning environments for students in local schools. This year’s grant focuses on providing safe school environment, especially for schools that are deteriorating and lacking of proper studying space. Students in these schools are exposed to harsh weather conditions and some are studying at buildings in danger of collapse. The assistance provided by the Government of Japan aims to provide good learning environments to enhance capacity of students.

Since 1993, the Government of Japan has assisted 932 grass-roots projects in Myanmar under the GGP scheme including 493 education projects, 201 healthcare projects, 141 public welfare and environment projects, 61 infrastructure projects and 36 others to provide direct assistance to the people of Myanmar for the improvement of living standards. This assistance is expected to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Japan and Myanmar.
